The Spice Route going back by boat from Indonesia to Holland tells that sailors chewed nutmeg in order to endure the depression of very long sea trips. This little-known use of nutmeg gives it soothing virtues, in addition to its usual stimulating and pain-relieving virtues.

This evergreen tree, with a pyramidal habit, shows leathery dark green leaves above, whitish below. This 10-meter, permanently flowering tree is found on the Moluccas Islands, Sri Lanka, Indonesia but will only produce nuts after 15 years of demanding cultivation.
