Synthesized by the digestive system, digestive enzymes allow the division of complex molecules into simple and assimilable molecules by the body. They are produced in saliva, pancreas and stomach.

Each enzyme acts on a specific substrate. There are 3 types:
  • Glucolytic enzymes that act on carbohydrates.
  • Lipolytic enzymes that act on lipids. Lipases digest lipids.
  • Proteolytic enzymes that act on proteins. Proteases digest proteins.
